You have much lower gearing? (was:30-42-53 now: 22-32-44, or similar) If so, you need a der. to match, they are meant to fit a fairly narrow range of gears. It is also possible that the Deore crank is "spaced" differently than your old crank. You also need to readjust the der. It sounds like you just lowered it.
