Just get the compact and get it over with. Dropping one tooth might not even be noticeable. I rock a girly 50-34, and still drop the Lance wannabes at 19mph. (unless they had been racing, there is no way they could match my speed)
But seriously, why do you not want a compact? A compact sounds like exactly what you want.
