It really depends on the bike and the weather, I use shimano spd on most of my bikes fixie or geared. Although during the winter here in Minnesota I ride platforms, just too much damn ice and snow this time of year. Also last year I rusted the internals of one set of SPDs due to the abundance of salt here on the roads, now I just use platforms. On another note I just had to replace my rear wheel on my winter fixie due to the salt, rusted/fused together not even fixable. I bought a decent suzue/ma3 for bout 85 here at my LBS, lets hope it lasts longer than my last one...
