Get a rain bike, or at least some fenders and go ride. I bought a used bianchi volpe for a few hundred bucks and put fenders on it. Its a little bit heavier than my racing bike, but the riding position is more comfortable. I ride centuries on it when its raining. I commute to work on it, some days I'll throw some beer or groceries in the panniers and find some steep hills on the way home. Don't worry about the weight, think of it as resistance training. With a full time job its the only training I have time for, but it works. I lube the chain frequently but otherwise don't worry about cleaning the filthy thing. Every 6 months or so I'll just replace all the cables and housing, repack bearings and all that.
