I don't think the Trek Lime is available yet. Why not just go with a Townie or some other bike from Electra? They have been out for quite a few years and are decent bikes. Some of the cruisers are really neat looking. At least with the Electra bikes you know what you are getting. There is a huge selection of exactly what your parents are looking for.

I would always be leary of the first model year of any car or bike...especially one with a transmission that is atypical for the industry and Trek.

An internal gear hub(3 speed) coaster brake + front hand brake and an upright geometry with a forward crank should fit the bill.
