On the road I pop in a new tube, then I patch the puncture when I get to work or home, draft that as my new spare. I also have a spare in my desk, and another spare in the garage, so more or less 5 tubes in rotation. I've only retired tubes so far from changing bikes, tires, or tearing the stem. No more than I would guess 8 patches on any one tube in the fleet.
