If you don't train to stand while climbing you're not going to be effective at it. When I do climbing intervals I sequence them sitting/off the seat on the hoods/off the seat in the drops. Sometimes I'll do a full 5 minutes off the saddle in the hoods or the drops.
Doing this sequenced training was something I picked up watching one of those "Lance" things on the Fitness Channel. It was a tiny 2 minute bit that was background to some voice over junk but it made the light bulb go off.
+1, I also saw this. I believe Lance does 1 minute sitting, 1 minute standing.
