I did a 63.88 mile ride with several roadies and three of them were wearing those Shimano sandals. They said they were fine but you didn't get the same 'pulling-up' power as with regular cycling shoes. And yeah, only recumbent riders should wear these; along with the tie-dye t-shirt and cut-off jeans.
If the OP is just trying to get to class he should just have the platform pedals and whatever shoes/flip-flops, crocs, chukka boots, earth shoes, duck shoes, boat shoes, etc. he likes.
