what i mean is this: when you aren't wearing a helmet, you are more aware of our surroundings, you hear and have more peripheral vision. THat way when you do start to crash or fall, you are aware, and you do whatever you can to save yourself. Your throw out your arms, rear up your legs, brace for impact. you even try to steer yourself out of falling.
I call BS on this. If you have a good, well-fitting helmet you don't even know it's there. There are times when I'll be 3 or 4 miles into a ride and I'll think, "Crap, do I have my helmet on?" and I reach up to check. My helmet does not change my riding style.
