I did the BBC ride that started at Mt. View Middle School--71 miler.
Unfortunately, I only got a metric century done. After lunch, I was hammering up a hill. I thought I could have gotten up it in the 53T, but it turned up just oh so slightly enough where I needed to drop down to the 39T. When I did, all hell broke loose. I hear carnage at the RD. I stop immediately to find I had busted my chain and the RD hanger. The RD got tangled up in my spokes and pulled around the wheel for 360 degrees. Luckily I stopped when I did or I would have yanked out some spokes. Also, the RD cable housing, up by my handlebars, looked like it exploded. It was a bird's nest of wire and housing. It was pretty damned impressive. The rest of the club was behind me. They stopped to see what had happened. You should have seen the incredulous looks on their faces.
Anyway, one gentleman was able set me up in a fixed gear of 39 x 17. Another guy, who lives in the area, said he'd escort me back to the ride start using the quickest way possible. It was still about 20 miles away, though.
I found it kind of humorous on the way back, because my escort and I started dropping some of the weaker riders and after we turned off of the main ride, I started to drop my escort and another gentleman who came along with us--on the hills nonetheless!
Anyway, we made it back with no further problems. The bike is at Princeston Sports for repair. I should get it back Wednesday after work.
