Just for encouragement, I'm coming up on 50 pounds lost since October, and I really have only worked at it since about Christmas. I'm 6'4" and had crept up to about 275 when I had the usual Serious Talk with the doctor: "Not much sign of anything yet, but if you keep going the way you are..." etc.
Of course he was right--I'd gained more than 40 pounds in three years after a job change and some personal things. I started riding more regularly and knocked off most of the snacks, and I was at 232 Friday morning. It's come off pretty painlessly, but exercise is really the key for me--it's hard as hell to lose weight by diet alone. Get out and move around nearly every day even if it's only for half an hour, and you can do it. I'm aiming for 230 by Easter (riding a metric century the day before), then five pounds a month until I hit 210, which is what I weighed in high school 45 years ago.
