It's good to know to at least change a flat tyre, and how to keep the chain lubed. Lubing the chain keeps it from driving you mad from the squeaking, if nothing else.

A lot of choices there in the DC area for bikes on CL--you should not have too many problems finding something suitable if you poke around a bit.
