Road cycling attracts many with an introspective personality or in other words, shy people. I think mountain bikers tend to be more extroverted than roadies, so what you're seeing sometimes may be more shyness than snobbiness. But yeah, if I saw someone still riding downtube shifters, they would not be worthy of licking the dirty Simple Green dripping off my road bike while I'm cleaning it.
