I was wary of the whole "snob" thing when I started racing too. Everyone was hanging out in little groups, nobody was paying attention to me, blah, blah, blah. Then I went out and raced, and started to meet people. I'd come up to someone and tell them "good race" and a conversation would start up. A few months later I end up on a team.
There's no magic to it. Bike racing is hard, and as you keep showing up race after race, you see familiar faces and eventually become part of the little society. Part of it comes from being respected as a rider, too. One squirrely guy in a race can easily take out a huge number of guys, so it's important to establish yourself as a safe, competent rider. Once you do that, you'll find all those cool people to be friends with.
