If you are going over Raton, you'll probably end up along the Purgatory River on CO350 like Countrydirt suggested (unless you take 160 out to Springfield). If you go that way, look for a book by Elaine Pinkerton called Santa Fe Trail by Bicycle. It's got lots of good information about that area and it will help you look done the road a piece to see what's coming up. It's also got some good history about the Santa Fe Trail. If you go to La Junta, make the 10 mile side trip to Bent's Fort. It's worth it.
