If/when you replace the gear cables replace the housing, too. Don't scrimp on the housing by trying to use some generic universal type because your shifting will suffer, no doubt. Sti quality housing can be $2 per foot at your lbs, but well worth it. I know, I've tried to go the cheap route and ended up getting the 'good stuff' anyway. For your chain go w/t Sram pc-58(or 48...it's a little cheaper, but essentially the same except color). Have been amazed at how much better they are than the generic brands. And +1 for replacing the freewheel, too.

I suffer from CRS(creeping rebuild syndrome) Start out w/a brake adjustment and end up w/t bike scattered all over my living room having cleaned/lubed every moving part possible. A 5 min job turns into a 5 hour marathon. And heaven help you if you get FFD(fixie fever disease)...I've got it as a result of time spent here on bf...what was the question?
