Back in the seventies, Rigida made some horrible steel rims with an embossed pattern on the braking surface. This was intended to improve the braking, but it really didn't make any noticeable difference.
That's what I'm thinking of, there's definitely a pattern, though I didn't notice a brand name on the rim.
