I rode alot and ran a few races last year. I decided in southern WV I needed disk brakes, and full suspension with shocks and forks that could be set up to my body weight, with lockouts.
I ended up with a new FSR xc. It is a learning experience and I came here to get advice after a Walmart bike debacle. I picked a Hardrock, and I wish I had spent the extra money and bought a Rockhopper disc right off the bat. I still ride it some, but it is on the auction block if the right buyer comes along. It wasn't worth upgrading an entry level bike for me, so I spent my bonus on a new one and have the Hardrock as a back up if something breaks.
Be sure to not let them sell you one that is too big. My Hardrock was an XL and my FSR xc is a L. It makes a huge difference in handling on tight trails. I don't want to discourage you from buying one, I'm just telling you about my experience.
