To answer your more specific questions, you can not turn a regular cassette hub into a flipflop wheel.
It is pretty hilly around here, and most people are using 2:1 for their single speeds.

That helps alot. I've got a couple of cassettes lying around, I'm just gonna have to scavenge a frame from somewhere. I don't wanna fix/ss my beater mountain bike because it's nice to have a spare bike for folks to come ride with me.
