You know, that sounds like the answer, or the start of it. I can see that the Stein vise allows you to feel the play with the QR clamped by flexing the rim, where that would seem to be difficult with just the spacer - much shorter lever arm. But I'll try it first.
Stein vice is $11.50 at biketoolsetc. Not bad.
