In order to adjust the rear hub bearings, it looks as if the freehub needs to be removed. If so, how is this done?

Also, there is a large, flexible rubber seal that seems to be in the way. If it needs to be removed, how is it done, and do you need to be careful in order not to damage it?

(The unit in question is a Shimano STX hub from the mid-90s.)
