Linus, my feeling is that if I snap a rail on my saddle fifty miles from home (or similar hassle) I've got enough cash available to make the equipment purchase and get my bicycle back on the road. If it's a trashed wheel, it's enough money to talk someone into providing a ride home for me and a broken bicycle! Besides, carrying $100.00 in cash weighs less than carrying $35.00.
