Find a used bike. Go talk to your local cycling clubs, explain your situation. Theres tons of great bikes out there sitting unused just waiting for soemone like you...but you gotta go out there and find them. While both of the bikes you mentioned are fine bikes, theres nothing special about either, and you'll likely want something else very soon. you can get a BETTER quality bike for less if you put some initiative into it. be proactive, hang around you local bike shop, find a bike co-op nearby, put want ads on campus/craigslist, contact the local clubs (also see if theres a club on campus), etc. you'd be amazed at what you can find.
