The age of the bb, the riding conditions it is exposed to, and the type of rider all play into the lifespan of a bb.
If your crankarms and chainrings are tight/torqued to spec...there's a good chance that the bb may be worn out. If you have the correct tools, it is not a tough fis. However, buying the tools along with a bb could be a costly venture. It all depends how far into the maintanance aspect you want to get....
