the rule--or rather, tradition--against split infinitives is silly, pointless, and ill-conceived. the latin infinitive is one word and can't be split. the english infinitive, though, is two. for god knows what reason, we saw that the romans couldn't split their infinitives, and decided we shouldn't split ours.
