A new Strada big chainring has been on my 'parts to replace' list for the thrashed 1973 chrome Paramount I'm restoring.
In this old thread.
The original one is a size 54 (first photo), in fair to average shape but with a chipped tooth (lower right in picture), and just inside of that there is some damage to the finish--the previous owner mentioned the bike was in some sort of calamity. There isn't a protruding peg on the outer circle on the face of it. "Patent Campagnolo" and the size it reads on the inner circle.
I got a brand new one on Ebay (second photo). Perhaps I overpaid. But, in my defense, one other fool thought it was worth about that price too. A size 52. It's got a peg on the outer circle and it reads "Brev. Campagnolo" and the size on the outer circle. The old Campy paper sleeve, which it was pictured with in the auction, came with it and reads "Strada" up on top, doesn't show a peg, and reads "Patent Campagnolo" and the size on the inner circle. My photo doesn't show the whole sleeve.
So, is the era of the new ring much different from the original one? If so I'd be likely want to replace it. It's Strada I think--that's the design, correct? It's got that peg--the peg is funtionally better to have? And also, the script won't match the "Patent Campagnolo" which the useable inner ring and crank reads.
I'm no Campy expert--this restoration is my first foray into it. I admit that I'm guilty of assuming that any 52 tooth Strada chainring would be exactly like the one I had.
The new one is different from the image on the sleeve and the original one, but should I be picky about it and ask the seller for a refund if they can't provide the correct one, if I even decide to do that? Is a correct ring in nice condition difficult to find? (Note: No feedback has been left for each other yet and I'm not inclined to drop negatives.)
Sorry for all the questions. Any input is appreciated. I've promised the frame I'd fix the neglect which it was subjected to for so long with worthy parts to replace the broken and worn ones. Pretty much the only substantial part still needed is the rear brake caliper. I just want to do the right thing for it here re the chainring.
