I just put together a Norco shore hardtail with a long fork. With a shorter fork, like a Pike, it would be a great bike that should climb okay, descend well, and handle a bunch of abuse.
I got my frame pretty cheap through my LBS. They contacted Norco who still had a bunch of 2006 crash replacement frames.
