Is this Sheldon's technique? I do this on a regular road bike with Campagnolo 9 speed stuff and it works great. The cables touch the down tube but no shifting problems whatsoever. This is on an older ti frame with downtube shift lever bosses on the sides of the downtube so that arrangement is really not a problem either.
