this can definitely explain why you don't hear the clicking when you're indoors or not riding and jumping up and down on the saddle. i definitely hear tiny ticks from the handlebar region when going up against headwind or in cold weather, but can never recreate the noises indoors. it has everything to do with the reaction of the metal used in the components to variations in humidity and temperature.
