Well they were working with a true story. I think with the modern standard of hour and a half films, its hard to get enough time to really develop any kind of necessary sub plot. But that said I think they did an ok job of it.
I think this is why tv series like sopranos and 6 feet under have been so popular. There is so much more time and everything can be given so much more depth.
