aside from the obvious air pollution, personal vehicles occupy an extremely large amount of urban space, which is dirrectly correlated to quality of life. among other things, including material consumption, like rubber tires. they are too costly to recycle and can create very toxic situations. instead of saying more, i would just recommend reading "asphalt nation" by jane holtz kay, and to keep an objective mind.
