I agree with the idea that there should be practically no cars within major metropolitan areas (such as the ones that most of you seem to live in).
However, when I go to New Hampshire to climb some mountains and swim in some lakes, having a car is nice.

I drove CONSTANTLY back in Montana. I had to, it get's friggin cold for one. There's NO public transportation in the town I lived in, and it's spread out. And chances are, if you went to a buddy's house, he lived 20+ miles away out in the middle of nowhere.
Now I'm in California and really don't understand why people drive. ESPECIALLY in the bay area. BART is so rad. And biking is radder.
