Different people adapt differently at altitude, so only your body will know what's best. The general advice is that if you don't have a few days to acclimate, drive up the day of the event. Do not drive up and sleep at altitude the night before, as you body dumps plasma big time when it first gets to altitude.

I've also found that acclimatization is cumulative. The first trip of the year is tough, but they get easier as the season goes on. With that in mind, I can recommend (shamlessly ) our Kiss of Death long weekend as a nice altitude training trip.
