differant brake bosses on mid 80's mongoose

I am building up a 84-84 model mongoose ATB into a touring /commuting bike. all is well except for some reason the canti. bosses seem to be welded on backwards. the spring tension holes are on the outside(away from the wheel/tire)instead of the inside(towards the wheel /tire). currently I am useing an old set of shimano canties from the early 90's,modified by drilling a new hole in the arms 180 degrees from the original spring tension hole.they are working ok, but not great. all three LBS have been of no help to figure this out. the only help I have been able to get is a referance to suntour "self energizing" cantis that apparently have the spring mount built in. I found some old Avids that had a similar internal spring set up.
I would like to find the correct style brakes for this frame,or find an appropriate way to modify a set that will work better than whats there. thanks
