This bike almost certainly was originally equipped with Dia Compe centerpull cantilever brakes. I've got an 84 or 85 Mongoose ATB, bought it new, that's what it's equipped with. These brakes have arms that stick out perpendicular to the seat stays, and take a long, double-ended saddle cable.
