Mentally, I don't consider swerving out of the way of potholes as 'taking the lane', but I can see that as a valid defensive cycling tactic.
I don't consider it that way either. Swerving is just bad. If the lane is full of potholes on the right or is just narrow, you're allowed to get to the centre of the lane and stay there until it becomes suitably wide and smooth to share.
