how do you tell speed of traffic by hearing it?

I mean, yeah, I know where it is (behind me) but I don't know that it is DIRECTLY behind me about to hit me...

speed... I guess you could listen for it getting louder.. but at 60 miles an hour.. that really doesn't help.
