My last bike was a Gary Fisher Zebrano. This was a hybrid. I liked it just fine. But if you stay on the road all the time, you may want to look into a road bike. You'll rarely find me in the drops, but you'll fine that riding the hoods to be pretty upright. Also with more positions for your hands(drops,hoods,bars), I find a road bike to be more comfortable. Checkout several bike shops and test ride a few different makes and styles. And then do some online homework.
