i used to wash mine on my balcony. the apartment below me was used by an old guy who refurbished gas heaters/bikes/fridges, so i had no qualms about dirty water running over the balcony, into what amounted to a scrap heap in the back garden.

in a different place now, so these days i wash my bike on the street, with two buckets of water - one soapy, one just water.

i do minor stuff (changing tires/cassettes/chains, wrapping tape, rebuilding RDs, etc) inside, the rest goes to the shop.
