Yeah.. I'm actually liking the high end Polar stuff because you can add the power bits later as an add on if you want. I don't see myself ever getting serious enough to really warrant something like that, but at least it's there if I want it. Although they do turn up used occasionally.
On Polar - I've been using a lower end polar HRM (F6.. no bike-related goodies involved) to keep an eye on my maxHR/avgHR/zones while out on training/group rides.. it does the job, but the amount of data collected for transfer is disappointing (i.e. only max, average, and time spent in one zone). Also - I would recommend avoiding anything that uses soniclink for data transfer.. it's a bit unreliable in windows (where it's intended to work), and I suffered quite a bit of annoyance trying to get it working in linux.
