Another option is to buy 50 and 36 tooth chainrings (send the old ones to me) and a compact front derailleur and voila! you have a compact crankset.

You will want an 11 in the back and a big cog too to simulate the gearing possibilities of a triple, and with 8 speeds you may be somewhat more limited than on newer systems.

And if you want a cog bigger than 26 or 27 you may need a longer cage derailleur - and it would have to be DA 7400 since it's incompatible with anything else. I don't even know if there was such a thing as a medium or long cage DA 7400 rear.
