No one has even mentioned the possibility that your 8 speed DA may be from 1989 and is Uniglide, the only year this happened. Meaning you have almost no cassette options and need a new hub as well.

You can pull your rear wheel to see if the cassette has a lockring. If it does, you're clear, if not, add to your list.
