Yeah, it's most likely quite different. I know for surgical residents the research year(s) is/are a chance to recharge the batteries a bit. I'm pretty happy with the number of publications/presentations/awards/etc. I've been able to produce for the year, though, so I feel like I got a good combination of work, reward, and rest.
