Sounds completely normal to me. I had zero skills in traffic when I started 14 months ago. It took a while to get comfortable in the flow of traffic. In fact, just the other day, I rode over to my wife's work so that we could ride home together. On the way, there's some pretty hairy sections. At one point, I realized that I was shifting, braking, merging and signaling at the same time in order to stay in the flow of traffic. I realized that my skills have sharpened enormously since that first commute.

The point is: you'll start learning quickly if you keep at it and your confidence will build. Perhaps if you take some weekend rides on less traveled roads you'll find it more comfortable than the trial by fire during morning traffic.
