Not sure what the moral of the story is but is sure sucks to have your driving record dinged if someone in a car wrecks you on your bike.

Not sure if what i am about to say makes sense or not or even helps :
I Live in CA too. Sunday, mother's day , I got into a bike wreck with a car...
What the the Police officer said to you is incorrect. I do not think or believe that you can or they can ding your state drivers lice. for what happened...In California a bike is considered a device not a vehicle so even though you have to obey the same rules there are loops holes you can exploit.... but the SF Cops told me Monday that the driver would get a nice hefty ding on his state license... heck they didn't even ask for my cs drivers ID they just wanted an ID for proof of who I am and so i gave them my passport

.
Just make sure you get that police report. It help me out a lot and now the driver who caused my wreck is paying out to fix my bike.
Did you get the drivers ID , proof of insurance info and car Lice. # ?
Also I found out that if car driver's insur. comp. accepts blame then that driver gets dinged on his license and insurance rates. That's if they take care of payment then your insurance stays the same, but of course that still depends of who is you insurer. If you have insurance and your company pays out then you can see a ding on that....
If you have home owners insurance or renters insurance call your insur. and see if you can file a claim if your bike some how is covered under your HOI.
In the US not many Home or renters insurance providers will cover your bike but some do ... some have distance limits as to how far you are from you home some don't. if you can get compensated for your damages go out and pick up insurance on your new bike that away you can collect more $$$ for what gets smashed up.
and the health thing Frugle said is true... Go see your doctor get x-rayed and do some physical therapy.you never know what could be torn or cracked. I didnt start feeling any pain from my wreck until a day or so later. I hit a car at 26mph. walked away feeling ok no scratches but now my shoulder is messed up and so is my wrist ...
if this gets settled via the driver's insurance don't accept the medical pay out... if you do you may not be able to go back after the guy or his insur. company later on.
