Help removing the axle from an old frame

I'm trying to convert a '65 Raleigh "Grand Prix" into a fixed gear. After some problems removing the crank arms (who would have thought that hitting the screws really hard with a hammer would be the proper solution?) I have no idea how to remove the axle. one side seems to be a giant screw (I can only tighten and loosen it so much) and the other side seems to be a circle with two flat sections. I have no idea how to go about removing this/what tools etc. If anyone could offer advice, it'd be much appreciated!
