Ive nearly done this. I used a White Industries 2 speed freewheel with a 42/52 double up front. Had front and rear Nuovo Record deraileurs. So it was a 4 speed. No real advantage over a conventional deraileur set up apart from it would have lasted longer and the real wheel, having zero dish, was stronger.
