What gives with the new pattern? Have you performed any visibility tests? Is one pattern more eye catching than the other?
The new pattern seems to be a bit more effective due to their proximity creating a "larger" surface area that's hit by the light making it appear brighter. Splitting the rim into quarters creates distinct "on" and "off" zones which aids in the observers ability to observe directionality.

I've seen both of our bikes from the driver's seat and I have to say even with the bike's lights turned off the visibility of the bikes is pretty good. Once again the tape is no substitute for lights, and should never be thought of or used as such, but the added benefits when used in conjunction with lights are excellent.
