Yes, it's fairly typical of Japanese instructions. They do it to avoid having to print the translation into 7 languages.

I actually like the graphical instructions. I've been using Cateye computers with cadence for as long as I've been riding and the instructions have always been like that. For the simple computers, the graphical stuff makes it easy to find the section I'm interested in quickly without having to read thru a lot of text. The last two I bought were Astrale 8, and I only really used the instructions to set up the wheel diameter. Everything else is self-explanatory.

Something like the CD300DW wouldn't work well with graphical stuff.
