I think brand recognition has a lot to do with Bridgestone's popularity. Everyone has heard of Bridgestone - "They must be good if they're still around, right?"
We have a congresswoman in Texas that readily admits that her name - Delco is solely responsible for getting her elected. And based on her record I would tend to agree.
Edit: I've been corrected that Delco was not in congress, rather the legislature. But she really did say that in a joking manner, just as I did. (this forum needs *bigger* emoticons)
